The Helene Center for the Visual Arts will host an interactive installation of Julia Franklin’s newest body of work, “Picking Up the Pieces.” You will be immersed in sounds and imagery in an experience where art and artifact blur. You can rummage and discover documents to uncover secrets and try to piece together the life of Julia’s father and the reasons behind his suicide 28 years ago.
Join me for a reception of “Picking Up the Pieces” in the lobby of The Helene Center for the Visual Arts at Graceland University from 5-8pm on Friday, January 25, 2019. Take time to explore the 4 room installation and ask questions and provide feedback about the experience.
Come and hear a read-through of Julia’s play, “Keeping Up Appearances.” Dr. Gary Heisserer is directing this event which will feature Tracy Salter, Cat Clifford, Gary, Julia, and her daughter, Skye, reading roles. The play, inspired by an observation from Gary that her installations always reminded him of a set without actors, will be staged inside “Picking Up the Pieces” which will be on view at The Helene Center on Graceland University’s campus in Lamoni, Iowa. The play is an emotional one that focuses on pivotal moments - the day when Julia’s father went missing, the aftermath of his funeral, and the discovery over 25 years later of family secrets and mysteries.
Julia will give an artist talk about her latest projects, “Picking Up the Pieces,” and her related play, “Keeping Up Appearances.” Her artist talk will be held in Carol Hall in the Shaw Center at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa at noon on Monday, February 18, 2019. She will give details on the developing story and showcase works about it. Come with questions and prepare for an exciting dialogue.
